Port of Helsinki
Land Transport and Travel To and From Port Helsinki
(Helsinki, Southern Finland, Finland)
Helsinki has one of the best public transport systems in Europe. Helsinki City Transport (HKL) manages public transport within the city including direct service to the port, while Helsinki Metropolitan Area Council (YTV) handles regional transportation outside the city proper.
Taxis also line up at the terminals, and a ride downtown should take no more than 10 minutes.
Travel by Bus and Shuttles
There are several bus lines which stop at the port and travel into Helsinki City. Most buses link up with the Helsinki Metro, VR Commuter Line or Helsinki Central Railway Station, making it easy to transfer between destinations. Two of the passenger terminals do not have their own bus stops, though trams and taxis are available at these terminals.
Car Hire and Road Travel
Driving to the port by car is fairly easy and straightforward. From outside the city, join the motorway and follow the signs for Helsinki. Once in town, signs leading to the port are marked with a ship symbol.
Car hire can be arranged from the terminal or booked in town. Many major car hire companies such as Avis, Budget and Hertz have offices in Helsinki. The most dependable way to book a car is to make a reservation online through a website that searches various companies for the best rates.
Trains and Rail Travel
Of Helsinki's 11 tram lines, four of them connect the port with downtown Helsinki. All of the lines intersect at various places in the city centre and have at least one stop at a Helsinki Metro station. The Helsinki Metro runs east-west from downtown to the eastern suburbs.
Car Parking
A limited number of short-term and long-term parking spaces are available at the port. The car parks are unattended, though a fee is still required.
Travel by Taxis
Taxis are almost always waiting at the passenger terminals. Taxi stands are located just outside the exits. Taxi service numbers can be found at the information desks inside the terminals. Avoid unofficial taxi drivers that offer their services at the port.
